Google Chrome for Android introduces online payment authentication using fingerprint and facial recognition. Rather than entering your credit card details for each transaction, you will be able to use your biometric data to validate payments.

Chrome for Android: Fingerprint payment

If you are on Chrome and regularly use your credit card for online purchases, you should already know that the browser allows you to automatically fill in your credit card data for even faster purchases. The only non-synchronized information that you always have to enter manually is the visual cryptogram, the 3-digit code behind your bank card. Google makes the process even easier.

Since last May, Chrome on Windows 10 allows you to enable one of the Windows Hello options as an authentication method instead of the visual cryptogram. Instead of entering the 3-digit code, simply use your fingerprint or facial recognition on compatible PCs.

Now it's Chrome for Android's turn to be compatible
Google has just announced that the feature is coming on Chrome for Android, with some improvements to the auto-typing experience. The principle remains the same as with Windows Hello. You will be able to retrieve your credit card details via biometric authentication instead of entering the visual cryptogram code. You will still have to enter it manually the first time you use it. All subsequent transactions will simply require a fingerprint or face recognition.

For the security part, your biometric information is managed with W3C's WebAuthn standard which guarantees that none of your data will ever leave your device. In addition to biometric authentication, Google Chrome for Android hosts a new feature for quick entry of your login data. When you go to a website where you have an account, a dialog box will automatically appear to allow you to log in easily. No need to search for the login form on the site. Google is preparing for the large-scale rollout of these new features in the coming weeks.
